Zach is a high school senior at Portland Adventist Academy and considers himself shy, adventurous, and artistic. So we decided to explore his artistic side by photographing him on a tapestry of colorful graffiti and urban landscapes in Southeast Portland, near downtown. Both of Zach’s parents are photographers, so he’s no stranger to being in front of the camera. And I was honored that he and his parents trusted me to create Zach’s senior portraits. When he’s not rocking his high school senior pictures, Zach enjoys reading, music, rock climbing, snowboarding, and basketball. He’s a fan of progressive metal music and likes to go on surfing trips with his friends.
Sarah is a snowboarder, so creating senior portraits with Mount Hood standing tall in the background made perfect sense! She said she wanted her senior pictures to have “an image focused on me but with a cool landscape in the background.” Sarah hails from Edgewood High School in Madison, Wiisconsin. But she’s spent three summers now attending snowboard camp at Mount Hood, most recently as a counselor in training.
Wyatt is quiet, polite, and a bit shy. So it might surprise you to learn that he’s one of Oregon City High School’s football stars. In fact, Wyatt plays football and track at Oregon City High School. He also enjoys snowboarding. He loves’ working out and knows a lot about physical training and sports nutrition. When he’s not on the field competing, Wyatt likes to draw and paint and is also into photography. He loves going on spontaneous trips. And he dreams of going on a cruise and relaxing after making it through his high school career. Ironically, I first met Wyatt at the end of his junior year. His girlfriend, Scarlet, twisted his arm into taking portraits before going to Prom. But as it turns out, the three of us had a blast. And together we created some stunning images of the two of them in their formal dress and suit. After the prom portrait session, both Scarlet and Wyatt were excited about getting together again to create their high school senior pictures.
Sunset High School’s Reilly feels like an old friend. That’s probably because years ago I had the honor of creating her older sister’s senior portraits. And I’ve also photographed her little brother. It’s almost like I’ve become part of the family. And I feel so privileged to be able to capture these special moments in their lives. And to create beautiful canvasses and other artwork for the walls in their home. Like her sister, Reilly is outgoing and adventurous. She also loves to sing and draw and hopes to travel after graduation. Like many high school seniors, Reilly wanted to have her senior pictures taken outdoors. And she and her mom discovered the location on their own. Reilly lives in Cedar Hills, just down the road from Commonwealth Lake Park.
Cole is a championship track star at Sandy High School. He’s also a bit of country boy and has been riding ATV’s since he was 2-years old. He doesn’t live in Sandy, though. Cole and his family live out i Brightwood, Oregon, tucked away in a quiet little spot along the Sandy River. And that’s where Cole decided to take his senior pictures. So we spent a lot of time during his senior portrait session exploring his back yard and buildings around Cole’s home. Cole lives on a rural country road in a small community where everyone knows their neighbors. As a result, we were able to take some of Cole’s senior pictures using a fence and other features on his neighbor’s property. The area has plenty of ferns, trees, and other foliage. And we still had some fall colors, which gave us plenty of background options for Cole’s senior pictures.
Sophie is a high school senior and a cheerleader at Sherwood High School. But when asked what she likes to do, Sophie is more likely to talk about drawing, listening to music, or hanging out with friends. She describes herself as outgoing and adventurous. She loves to travel (which is high on her to do list after graduation and before heading off to college). And her favorite dish is sushi. Sophie really wanted her high school senior portraits taken in a rural area. She was especially looking for an open field in the background. So, after some searching and discussion, we settled on Powell Butte, a Portland Recreational Park, near Gresham, Oregon
Century High School senior, Kian, wants to go to college to become a computer programmer. He has big, fiery red hair and soft green eyes. And he’s more than a bit of a book worm. Every spare minute he has, you’ll find himself buried in a good book. When asked about his interests, Kian responds: “reading, reading, board games, reading, video games, and reading.” “I spend 90% of my free time reading,” he says. It’s no surprise that he enjoys quiet and solitude. He also enjoys forested areas with trees, particularly when there’s a nice breeze. So when it came time to decide on a location for Kian’s high school senior portraits, we decided to take his senior pictures at Rood Bridge Park.
