Gioia is a bright and energetic 10-year-old dancer who attends the Hollywood Dance studio in Northeast Portland. Gioia is a dedicated student who immerses herself in tap, jazz, and ballet, and her enthusiasm for each style is contagious. Hollywood Dance, located in northeast Portland, Oregon, is renowned for offering both recreational dance lessons and pre-professional training. This school fosters dancers like Gioia, who dream of a possible future in dance while enjoying every moment of their current journey.

Gioia’s portrait session was an exciting opportunity to capture her love for dance in a series of unique and dynamic images. We chose to photograph her in the studio against a classic white background and also against a solid red backdrop that complemented her vibrant red jazz outfit.

We began with the white background, a clean slate that put the focus squarely on her movements and expressions. This backdrop is ideal for highlighting the elegance and precision of ballet. The simplicity of the white background allowed Gioia’s grace to shine, creating timeless portraits that capture the essence of Gioia’s love for dance and the beauty of a ballet dancer’s poses.

Switching to the red backdrop was an exciting transition. Gioia changed into her red jazz outfit, and the vibrant color instantly brought out her lively and dynamic side. Jazz dance is all about energy and attitude, and Gioia didn’t disappoint. Her confidence and charisma came alive against the red background, making for bold and striking images.

The contrast between the white and red backdrops not only provided visual variety but also reflected the versatility and range of Gioia’s dance skills.

Capturing the Authentic Moments

As a photographer, my goal is always to capture the authentic moments that truly represent my clients. With Gioia, this meant photographing her in a way that highlighted both her technical skill and her joyful spirit. Throughout the session, I encouraged her to express herself and have fun, resulting in candid shots that are as precious as the posed ones. Whether it was a spontaneous laugh or a focused expression mid-dance, these genuine moments add depth and personality to her portraits.

Gioia’s session is a perfect example of how a dance portrait session can go beyond just capturing dance moves. It’s about telling a story—her story—and celebrating her dedication and passion. The combination of different backdrops, costumes, and dance styles provided a comprehensive representation of who Gioia is as a dancer and as a person.
