Sunset High School senior Madelyne (her friends call her Maddy) describes herself as adventurous, ambitious, and passionate leader who loves “hiking, camping, and exploring, especially at all of the beautiful waterfalls in the area.” So, when it came time to create her once-in-a-lifetime senior portraits, we set out for an adventure amongst the waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge!

Maddy is also a section lead in the marching band, playing the mellophone and french horn. In fact, she’s not just any marching band enthusiast. She’s talented enough that she marched with the prestigious Drum Corps International, a professional marching band that requires her to travel the country for months and rehearsing as much as 12 hours a day!

When it comes to her own musical tastes though, she opts for dancing instead of marching! “Pop and alternative are some go to genres,” she says. ” like the newer songs on the radio, but also some older ones, by Earth Wind and Fire and Michael Jackson. MGMT and Daft Punk are some good modern artists.” But don’t let her love of music mislead you. Maddy’s got big plans in her future that include heading off to college, working toward an engineering degree and she’s got lots of other projects in the making!”

Maddy, her mom, sister Charly and I started her senior portrait session at the famous Horsetail falls. There, a picturesque brick wall surrounds a shallow pool that captures the flowing horsetail as it cascades down from the cliffs above. From Horsetail falls we headed over the Oneonta Gorge where we photographed Maddy and her French horn against a cool moss and fern grotto.

Did I mention that Madelyne is a dancer? We found a spot at the base of Wahkena falls where she could show off her ballet shoes! And we ended our evening at Latourelle Falls, where Maddy finally got to take that hike she had been wanting all day! We had to move quickly though, as we were quickly losing light at the end of the day. But that didn’t stop us from creating some dramatic fashion images at the based of the waterfalls.
