My dog isn’t a big fan of fireworks, so every July 4th weekend we make it a point to disappear into the woods for a few days. This year brought us to Oregon’s remote Strawberry Mountain Wilderness.
The Strawberry Mountains are surrounded by Eastern Oregon Desert, near John Day and the highest peak, Strawberry Mountain, is just a hair over 9,000 feet. The fact that this range is east of the Cascade Range makes it one of the few Mountain backpacking trips that are snow free this early in the season.
The result was warm bug-free sunny days, amazing nigh skies, and beautiful rugged scenery. We camped beside beautiful lakes and streams and climbed rocky talus slopes that yielded breath taking panoramic views of the desert that surrounded us.
